Glastonbury Festival will return in 2025, putting to rest speculation about a potential fallow year. Music fans can look forward to another five-day celebration at Worthy Farm in Somerset, following this year’s headline performances from Dua Lipa, Coldplay, and SZA.
Traditionally, Glastonbury takes a break once every five years to allow the land – and the organisers – to recover. These are known as fallow years, the last of which took place in 2018. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the festival was also cancelled in 2020 and 2021, which Emily Eavis, co-organiser and daughter of festival founder Michael Eavis, referred to as “enforced fallow” years.
Looking ahead, Eavis has indicated that the next official break is likely to happen in 2026. Speaking earlier this June on the Sidetracked podcast by the BBC, she said: “Not yet, we are talking to people,” when asked if the 2025 line-up had been decided. “The thing with line-ups is, you think it’s looking one way and then it changes. So at the moment I would say no, but I have a vague idea in my head of who is going to be doing it next year. Then we might do a fallow year after that, we are due a fallow year.”
Eavis stressed the importance of these breaks, not only for the land and the animals on the farm but also for the spirit of the festival itself. “The fallow year is important because it gives the land a rest, and it gives the cows a chance to be out for longer and reclaim their land,” she explained.
She added: “And it gives everyone time to switch off. And I think it’s quite good not to be seen to be cashing in. At the best time when we could just rake it all in, to go ‘no’ is so important, that ethos, now more than ever. Sometimes you just need to calm it all down and come back with a renewed excitement and enthusiasm.”
Since its founding in 1970 by Sir Michael Eavis, the Glastonbury Festival has become a defining part of the British summer. While Sir Michael remains involved, the main responsibility now rests with Emily and her husband, Nick Dewey.
This year’s edition of the festival will also feature a unique and reflective moment on the Pyramid Stage. Performance artist Marina Abramović will lead a moment of silence calling for peace, with Eavis describing it as “a beautiful moment” that’s set to make a lasting impression on attendees.
As planning for 2025 gets underway, fans can rest assured that the next Glastonbury is firmly on the calendar – with a well-earned rest pencilled in the year after.
